Analysts often start with operating cash flow and subtract capital expenditure. Free cash flow to the firm and to equity use different financing treatments.
Working-capital movements, asset sales, acquisitions, leases and share compensation can complicate the headline. Maintenance and growth capital expenditure are rarely separated perfectly.
Reconcile the definition to the cash-flow statement and review several periods. Compare cash needs with depreciation, capacity and business growth.
Cutting necessary investment can inflate current free cash flow while damaging the future. One favourable working-capital movement may also reverse.
