A portfolio is the complete set of investments and cash considered together. Its behaviour depends on each holding's weight and on how the holdings move in relation to one another.

A team is judged by how its members work together, not only by its most exciting player. Roles, balance and interactions can matter more than the number of names on the sheet.
Now put that into markets
Each holding contributes return and risk in proportion to its size, while correlations affect how gains and losses combine. Portfolio design therefore concerns relationships as well as selections.
A portfolio may span asset classes, regions, sectors, currencies and accounts. Weights change as prices move, distributions arrive or the investor adds and removes capital.
Look through funds to the underlying exposures where possible. Ten funds can still leave a portfolio concentrated if they own many of the same large companies.
More line items do not guarantee diversification. Hidden overlap, leverage, illiquidity and currency exposure can make a portfolio behave differently from its labels.
