A mutual fund pools investors' money into a shared portfolio managed under stated rules. Investors usually transact with the fund at a calculated net asset value rather than trading continuously on an exchange.

Imagine many savers adding money to one pot that must be used according to a written rulebook. Each saver owns units representing a proportionate claim on the pot rather than specific assets inside it.
Now put that into markets
The fund manager applies the mandate to buy and sell investments. New subscriptions and redemptions create or cancel fund units at the applicable valuation point and price.
Mutual funds may be active or index-tracking and can hold shares, bonds or other assets. Their net asset value reflects the portfolio less liabilities, divided across the units or shares in issue.
Check the objective, benchmark, holdings, dealing frequency, valuation time, fees and any entry or exit terms. The fund name is only a signpost to the mandate.
Pooling spreads administration but does not remove market, manager, liquidity or currency risk. Some funds can suspend dealing when assets cannot be valued or sold fairly.
