Company guidance is management's stated expectation or range for future performance under current assumptions. It updates the information set but remains a forecast, not a commitment.

A driver can estimate arrival using current traffic and weather. The estimate is informed by direct knowledge, yet new conditions, optimism or caution can still make it wrong.
Now put that into markets
Management may guide revenue, margins, profit, cash or operating measures for a quarter or year. Markets compare new guidance with previous guidance and outside expectations.
Ranges, assumptions, constant-currency figures and non-standard measures need careful reading. Some companies guide conservatively or not at all, so style matters across time.
Record the exact measure, period, range and publication time. Compare subsequent actuals with the guidance that existed beforehand rather than a revised memory.
Management has information advantages and incentives. Guidance can be withdrawn, narrowed or missed, and a raised outlook can still disappoint a higher market expectation.
