A dividend is a distribution a company chooses to make to eligible shareholders, usually from available cash. It transfers value out of the company and is not an extra return created from nothing.

When a company pays a dividend, each eligible share receives the declared amount. The share price normally adjusts when the right to that payment separates on the ex-dividend date, alongside every other market influence.
Boards decide whether to declare ordinary or special dividends subject to law, finances and policy. Total shareholder return combines distributions with the change in share price.
Dividend yield divides an annualised dividend by the current share price. A high yield can reflect generous cash generation, a falling price, or a payment the market doubts can continue.
Dividends can be reduced or cancelled, and tax treatment varies. Focusing only on income can hide business deterioration, concentration and the capital needed to sustain payments.
