A cryptocurrency is a digitally represented asset whose ownership and transfer are recorded under a cryptographic network protocol. Rights, governance and economic purpose vary widely between tokens.

Many participants keep compatible copies of a ledger and follow rules for accepting updates. Control of a private key can authorise transfers, but does not guarantee the asset's value.
Now put that into markets
Networks use consensus mechanisms, validators and software to maintain state. Trading often occurs through exchanges or custodians that add separate counterparty risk.
Supply rules, fees, smart contracts, forks and governance differ. Stablecoins, utility tokens and decentralised network assets are not interchangeable.
Identify protocol, token rights, custody, liquidity, concentration, code and legal status. Verify what backs any claimed peg or yield.
Prices can be extremely volatile; keys can be lost; platforms, contracts and protocols can fail. Popularity or scarcity does not establish fundamental value.
